Edit charts with natural language
After an agentic chart is generated, you can refine its appearance, formatting, and type using natural-language commands. This feature lets you iterate on the chart visually without writing code or using manual configuration panels.
How natural-language chart editing works
When you submit a follow-up request that targets only the chart configuration, the system:

Interprets your intent — The LLM parses your natural-language request to identify chart changes (type, color, labels, axes, and so on).

Maps to chart parameters — The request is translated into specific chart configuration changes.

Re-renders the chart — The charting tool invokes the Muze charting service with the updated parameters and returns the new chart.

If your follow-up request only involves chart configuration changes (and does not require regenerating the underlying answer data), the system invokes the charting tool directly without re-running the analytical query. This means chart-only edits are typically faster than full answer regenerations. |

Example 1: Change chart type

The charting engine re-renders the data as a bar chart.
Example 2: Change colors

Each bar in the chart is assigned a distinct color from the palette.

Numeric values appear on each data point (for example, on top of each bar or at each line point).
"Show all data labels"
The chart ensures all data points are labeled, even if some would normally be omitted for readability.
Example 4: Format the Y-axis
"Change the Y-axis to show in thousands"
The Y-axis tick labels are reformatted. For example, 1,000,000 becomes 1,000 with a "in thousands" suffix.
"Change the Y-axis to show in millions"
The Y-axis tick labels are reformatted. For example, 1,000,000,000 becomes 1,000 with a "in millions" suffix.
Tips for effective commands

Be specific about what you want to change. For example, "Change the Y-axis to show in thousands" is more precise than "Fix the axis."

You can combine multiple changes in a single request, such as "Change to a bar chart and use blue colors."

The charting engine understands synonyms. "Make it a column chart" and "Change to a bar chart" may produce similar results depending on the data orientation.

If a command is ambiguous, the system will apply the most likely interpretation and render the chart.
Limitations

Natural-language editing applies to the chart configuration only. It does not modify the underlying data or query.

Some advanced chart features (for example, custom JavaScript, third-party chart libraries) are not supported through natural-language editing.

The system may not understand highly specialized or domain-specific chart terminology.
